New! Green Map Desk in Scotland

Green Map System has a new outpost in rural Scotland! Dunoon’s POP shop will host a dedicated Green Map desk at their shared workspace starting in May 2023. The desk at this design and social innovation space will be available to Green Mapmakers from the Dunoon region and to visitors with Green Map projects in their own communities.

By sponsoring a desk at the POP shop, the New York-based nonprofit organization Green Map System is supporting a social enterprise startup that is dedicated to designing solutions to climate change with the community. The People Of Place (or POP) shop provides a shared workspace and enterprise support services to a number of micro and social enterprises based in the region. The centrally located POP shop is a CIC - a community interest company, which is a UK public benefit business designation.

Supporting local Green Map projects across Scotland and beyond, the POP shop has provided bespoke training, communications and strategic services with the Green Map Platform Team since 2021. This international collaboration includes Platform’s developers, the Berlin-based GISCollective, Green Map System from the US, and Dunoon’s Tacit Tacit, which is Hannah Clinch’s design agency which is based at the POP shop. She noted:

“The POP shop is a small co-work space in a rural west coast town. It can be hard to sustain a space like this, so this unique collaboration with Green Map System makes a real difference to us. We’ll be able to increase our connection to other communities creating Green Maps and test out new ways of working to support sustainable community development.

”Green Map making resources are designed to help communities promote sustainable living resources utilizing a shared iconography. Adaptable, innovative tools already in use in 65 countries are open source and free to community map makers. "

“Green Map is delighted to have a workspace in Scotland at the POP shop,” says Wendy Brawer, founder of Green Map System.

“We are passionate about making our tools and resources available to people. Having a desk in Dunoon helps us engage more people and support leadership, knowledge exchange, and build skills for community and climate health. A direct outcome of our participation in COP 26, the UN climate conference held in nearby Glasgow in 2021, it’s exciting to see how many Scottish communities have new Green Map projects!

With both indoor and outdoor spaces, the POP shop is also a meeting point for Green Map workshops. The Green Map desk will be available by appointment - contact the POP shop at hello@popshop.scot
