Japan's Green Map of Kyoto was published on December 1, 1997. It was the first Green Map in Asia, debuting at the United Nations Third Conference on Global Warming (COP3). This lyrically beautiful Green Map was created by members of the Tennen Design Forum, who also hosted a Green Map Exhibit, a green tour, and an exchange workshop for NGOs attending COP3 in December 1997. Kyoto's Green Map was so well received that a second printing took place in 1998! We have produced several culturally specific Icons for their Map, including symbols for places to view fireflies, cherry blossoms, and maple leaves, because "they symbolize the relationship of the Japanese heart to nature." Some of these Icons were adopted into the global GMS Icons in 1999.
