Flow Country Partnership

Where?

The Flow Country Partnership exists to bring together a community including crofters, farmers, landowners/managers, local businesses, residents, ecologists and local government to grow the resilience of the Flow Country and its people. There is a fundamental interdependence between a resilient Flow Country landscape and thriving, resilient communities.

Despite being regarded as one of the best examples of blanket bog in the world, the Flow Country contains large areas degraded by drainage, afforestation and erosion. Degraded areas function less effectively as ecosystems and offer local communities less protection from natural disasters such as flooding and wildfires. In addition, degraded areas of peatland can become net emitters of greenhouse gases. Simultaneously, people face the pressing issues of a lack of affordable housing, childcare, and employment opportunities, leading to the migration of young people from the area. This profoundly impacts the social and financial resilience and sustainability of the communities. Alongside the restoration of the peatlands themselves, these challenges must also be addressed.
