What is Green Map?

Green Map was born in 1992 when Wendy Brawer created the world’s first Green Map, a simple, printed map highlighting New York’s green spaces. The idea was so popular that Wendy officially launched Green Map in 1995 to help communities all over the world create their own Green Maps.  With the involvement of the O2 ecological design network, we developed a universal system that could be used - by anyone, anywhere - to create maps highlighting different types of green resources - ten years before Google Maps existed.

Pioneers in community map-making

Green Map has now categorised 179 types of green resources across three genres: Nature, Green Living, and Culture and Society. Each resource is associated with a unique Green Map icon, which communities can use to identify and promote their local green resources to help create a more sustainable future.

Already in use in 65 countries worldwide, the Green Map toolkit continues to grow: born on paper, communities can now use the Green Map platform to create their maps online.
