SDG 14 - Life Below Water

Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development  is UN Sustainable Development Goal 14.

"Advancing the sustainable use and conservation of the oceans continues to require effective strategies and management to combat the adverse effects of overfishing, growing ocean acidification and worsening coastal eutrophication. The expansion of protected areas for marine biodiversity, intensification of research capacity and increases in ocean science funding remain critically important to preserve marine resources."

A walk along the banks of the River Kelvin that winds through Glasgow (9.8km, from the city all the way to Milngavie!) is a beautiful experience at any time of the year. Today, it's taken for granted that the Kelvin is thriving & healthy, a Glasgow City link to nature. Yet, it is only in recent years that the river's clean-up has supported its being such a rich natural habitat & thread of calm, right in the middle of the city.

This urban farm grows many fruits and vegetables. The diverse plant life is good for birds, bees, and butterflies. The farm contributes to the school's composting efforts. Students who work on the farm engage in hands-on work, encouraging them to engage in sustainable practices. New York Harbor School students and the Marine Affairs Program complete this greening operation. More info here.  https://harborpolicy.org/

The oyster reefs in the water at this location are in man-made cages, created and managed by the Billion Oyster Project. Oysters are filter feeders, meaning they filter through the water to remove algae, to eat, and often filter out pollutants as well. The oyster reefs also provide habitat for hundreds of species and can help protect New York City from storm damage.
