Grand Central Terminal, a historic transportation hub and architectural marvel, faces unique waste management challenges due to its 750,000 daily commuters and visitors. The constant flow of travelers, numerous food vendors, and retail establishments creates significant waste streams that often overwhelm existing disposal systems. While the terminal maintains a relatively clean appearance thanks to dedicated maintenance staff, behind-the-scenes waste sorting and recycling efforts struggle to keep pace with volume. Our mapping reveals hotspots near food courts and main concourses where improved bin placement, clearer signage, and strategic waste collection points could dramatically improve recycling rates and reduce contamination. Grand Central represents a perfect opportunity to demonstrate how efficient waste management systems can function effectively even in high-traffic urban environments.

New York Harbor School students collaborate with Earth Matter, a nonprofit organization helping the public with organic collection into compost. Their goal is to reduce organic waste put into garbage by encouraging and teaching people to compost, which is precisely what happens here. Earth Matter teaches the students how to compost, and then they use that knowledge to compost for the actual school, which is why they have that big tub. It's used to grind up the organic waste and make it into compost to fertilize the plants. Over the last three years, students have diverted about 30,000 lbs of school organic waste.

Collective Retreats is an area where you can rent a place tent to stay on Governors Island. The campsite provides a scenic view of Manhattan, a unique place to be. On the other hand, the tents cost about 300-1,200 dollars per night, which I feel is a bit too much to stay for such a short amount of time.

Castle Williams is war of 1812 era fort, a historical military and contemporary prison, haunted house in the Coast Guard years. Its got some history. This gem of an island is our country place in the city! With vast lawns for your picnic pleasure, it has great views & the island is wonderfully car free, to boot. Governors island is open year round, so dress for the weather and enjoy! With an academic climate center in the future, there are already terrific programs that connect community, food and climate action, including Earth Matter. the Billion Oysters, Swale, the Circular Manufactory, GrowNYC and more.  There is an official Picnic Point on the south end of the island, but there are many great spots for a picnic.  There are places to buy food on the island too.

We chose plants that have bird, pollinator, medicinal and food value to bring to our site: American Black Currants, Snow Berries, Coral Berries, Inland Sea Oats, Late Boneset, Asters, Solidago, Primrose and Heliopsis. All of the plants we have added to our space have been planted and will be cared for by our group of garden volunteers. We are an entirely volunteer-run community project that was started process compost in response to the DSNY's suspension of food scrap collection in the spring of 2020. On the land we manage collectively, in addition to making compost, we are growing herbs and vegetables for local mutual aid groups and community fridges along with developing a pollinator / wildlife garden. In fall 2021, we're working to expand open-hours for the community to enjoy the space and to develop programming for the youth and elderly neighbors.
