本財團法人創設於民國前三十九年（清同治十二年）。由當時台北艋舺地區「王益興行」倡議，並與「李勝發行」「林吉泰行」「吳源昌行」共同出資成立「艋舺同仁堂」，以捐款救濟貧病無依客死他鄉者，並購地充為義塚，建屋安厝，餘地闢為田園，顧佃耕種，滋利養生。
