Physical Distance Design

Even before the Pandemic, community members were trying to open Avenue B as a bike and pedestrian space, but it took the need for social distancing for cars to step back. In 202, DOT provided heavy wood barriers which were painted and moved daily by volunteers. Now several blocks are calm and open 8AM to 8 PM daily! A good alternative to gas-powered vehicles is biking.

This Village street will become even more village-like in late 2021, as it will soon become a permanent open street, where cars are guests and slow down for people. Check out a 2019 plan for more details. Already car-free on the north end, this street brings historic buildings, college students and local residents together.

This area's open streets are a bit fragmented around Orchard Street's 'spine'. You'll see many open dining areas, too.

A great place for active distancing, Pier 36 offers riverside refreshment and space to walk, run and bike. Access Pier 36 from Rutgers or Montgomery Street at the East River. Bonus - the south side connects to the new Eco Park at Pier 35 with excellent seating, swings and views. Just south, under the FDR Drive, there's a public gym!

Open daily 8 - 8, pedestrians are flocking to Ave B, from 14th to 6th st. Great for wheelchairs, strollers, shopping carts, bikes, skates - anything that rolls too. More to come!
