A good place to relax and refresh yourself in a community gathering place, often car-free open space that may have benches, a water feature, events, etc. It can be a public space located in a sunny plaza, garden or park, or in special cases, may be indoors in a mall. These places are often have an inclusive character and are accessible to all.

The Gateway Garden

This new community garden was established in early 2024 on site of an old garden, established on derelict land once occupied by housing. Thisd garden includes raised beds (including wheelchair accessible ones), tea shed, toolstore, herb and bee nectar/pollen plantings, wildflower meadows, bug hotel, compost heaps, hedge. Volunteers welcome. Some beds managed by local groups, others by volunteers. including local schools and nurseries, mental health groups and other community groups.

Ciénaga Grande de Magangué

En la Ciénaga Grande de Magangué, surgen conflictos hidrosociales debido a la contaminación del agua por vertimientos provenientes de fuentes domésticas, industriales, agrícolas y pecuarias. Además, la apropiación de terrenos por parte de ganaderos agrava la situación. La ciénaga, al inundar las viviendas aledañas, intensifica los problemas de salud y de habitabilidad en la zona, reflejando las tensiones entre el uso insostenible de los recursos y el impacto en las comunidades locales.

Though small, this park is usually not crowded and full of blossoms, making it a pleasure to chill out in. Fountains, concerts, picnic tables etc. but no sports facilities.

Pier 36, a hidden public pier

A great place for active distancing, Pier 36 offers riverside refreshment and space to walk, run and bike. Access Pier 36 from Rutgers or Montgomery Street at the East River. Bonus - the south side connects to the new Eco Park at Pier 35 with excellent seating, swings and views. Just south, under the FDR Drive, there's a public gym!

The Hawthorne Memorial Pool & Recreation Complex

This 10-acre property located on Wagaraw Road is Hawthorne's primary recreation complex. The property contains an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, Boro Bandshell, baseball/softball field, a passive recreation area, and in 2022 new children's playground.
