Eco Agriculture or Permaculture

Short for permanent agriculture, this sustainable system of agriculture and settlement is practiced all over the world. Permaculture Design can be applied to various types of projects. Eco-agriculture is a more general term.

This educational greenhouse is an active learning space in our school. It focuses on hands-on climate education. Students experience the farming process step by step. First, they research where their everyday food comes from to understand the environmental damage caused by global shipping. Next, they learn basic agriculture, build the greenhouse together, and prepare the soil.

Natembea is a cooperative farm project located on a 97-acre expanse of pasture, woods, and wetlands at the edge of Port Townsend, Washington. The farm was purchased by Devon and David Pablo Cohn in 2016 with the mission of preserving the land for community benefit while honoring its history as a family farm. Natembea practices sustainable agriculture, relying on interlocking resources and minimizing off-farm inputs, with no pesticides or synthetic fertilizers applied. The farm is significant for its agricultural importance and is part of efforts to protect working farmland in the region.

Grow Food Grow Dunoon is a project of Dunoon Community Development Trust. They are a group of people who came together because they wanted to grow their own food, not in a private allotment or garden, but as a team. The project runs courses in seed propagation, planting, composting and harvesting. They are also planning courses on natural bee-keeping, food preserving, tree planting and more.

Environmental Education

Solstice Family Farm is located on 33 acres on the beautiful Olympic Peninsula. We are a homestead style farm, where we not only grow vegetables, fruit, eggs and meat for market, but obtain much of what we need right from the land. We teach a variety of growing techniques: orcharding, pasture management, animal husbandry, carpentry and mechanical skills, farm equipment operation, pest management and a long list of other skills needed on a farm. It's safe to say that our farm has lots to keep you moving!

Eco Agriculture or Permaculture
