Burnside Gorge Neighbourhood Gems

Community mapping involves creating a map of a community that is told from the perspective of those who live, work, or play in the area. What places spark a special memory? Where do you feel most welcome? Where do you go to be with community? Where do you go to find peace in nature? These are just some of the prompting questions provided to participants at the community mapping events held in Cecelia Ravine in September and October of 2022. The stories collected at the events are captured here to create a map of 'Burnside Gorge Neighbourhood Gems.'

Community members are invited to continue building this map by identifying neighbourhood assets, looking at opportunities, and helping to create a picture of what it is like to live in the neighbourhood. Consider significant people, places, programs and experiences in the Burnside Gorge (and the surrounding area) and mark them on the map. Help identify the neighbourhood's hot spots, hidden gems, and everything in between! Please include a photo with your entry, if possible.

I live in the Howard Johnson. I thoroughly enjoy lounging in Banfield Park, which is just across the Selkirk Trestle, and taking the odd swim off the adjoining dock.

The ballpark where my grandfather learned to play baseball is a memory that I cherish as Tom Goodwin went on to be drafted by the Seattle Seahawks.

Bay St Bridge

As a kid, my father would take me and my brother down to the Bay St. Bridge, to watch the cranes shovel and move gravel with the huge bucket. Us brothers were so inspired, now I work in the very same yard. My brother works the crane loading the barge that lines the Gorge waterway.

Blackberries

A resident of Howard Johnson, I have a spot along the Goose where there seems to be an endless supply of blackberries. However, one can find blackberries, when in season, all along the Goose.

I noticed an older couple of a different culture picking blackberries. It inspired me to stop and take a moment of peace from the monotony.

Boardwalk

Having a year in need of wood and rocks and such. I've found some in my walks along the boardwalk by the Rower's Club. I went under the boardwalk and found my favourite rock there. I managed to get it home in spite of the salt and share edges that took a toll on my hands. It's a great area on a sunny day, but in rain or shine, it's a close place for me to get a but of exercise and get out of the house.
