Co. Tipperary Community Resilience and Wellbeing Map

Local Community Wellbeing & Climate Resilience Mapping is a process to empower Community Climate Coaches to guide community members in mapping their local strengths and resources, which will contribute to the development of Community Wellbeing and Climate Resilience Pathway for each Municipal District of County Tipperary.

About the project and Partners

The Community Climate Coach initiative is led by Cultivate, the Sustainable Ireland Cooperative, in partnership with the Tipperary Public Participation Network, South Tipperary Development Company, and North Tipperary Development Company.

It is supported by the Community Climate Action Programme: Climate Education, Capacity Building and Learning by Doing (Strand 2) is funded by the Government of Ireland through the Department of Environment Climate and Communications.

Arragh More Bog is situated roughly halfway between Carrigahorig and Birr. The site comprises a raised bog that includes areas of high bog and cutover bog. The entire Arragh More Bog comprises several interconnecting bogs, with till ridges running between deeper areas of bog. Arragh More (Derrybreen) Bog is a Special Area of Conservation as a site of considerable conservation significance, comprising as it does, a raised bog, a rare habitat in the E.U. and one that is becoming increasingly scarce and under threat in Ireland.

The Ballingarry Community Development goal is to act as a conduit between members of our community and relevant agencies to ensure the energy efficiency of houses and community buildings can be improved to current standards and to lead a community owned sustainable energy generation project. In collaboration with Energy Communities Tipperary Cooperative and Littleton Development Association, they are leading the ‘Community Led Just Transition North Tipperary’ Project that aims to mobilise community-led energy efficiency in communities around Littleton.

Ballingarry Community Development has been created in 2002. Running an I.T/Training centre, full day care service (Brightsparks Childcare), the company also sponsors a Community Employment scheme and administers the Senior Alert Alarms Scheme.

Ballyporeen Community Council is a very active group working towards positive change for their local community. In 2022, they won a national Pride of Place award in the Population 300 – 1,000 category. The group was praised by judges for demonstrating “strong passion, initiative, and adaptability. They are ambitious for the future and love what they do and make a valuable contribution to Ballyporeen and adjoining communities.”

Community park and orchard developed as an amenity and biodiversity area by Ballyporeen Community Council.   The facility also leads into a community walkway around the garden and extending along the river bank and the GAA pitch.

Birdhill Energy Team

Birdhill Energy Team is one of the founding members of Energy Communities Tipperary Co-operative (ECTC). They joined in 2014 and have been very active in supporting the newer communities since. The Birdhill Energy Team are part of their multiple award winning Tidy Towns organisation. As a group, they access grants annually to carry out retrofitting works on homes & community buildings.
