A light was first established on the island in 1906. The island is situated approximately 80km off the coast of Chilayo in Northern Peru. The first lighthouse was made of cast iron and would have housed the 2nd order revolving lens from Chance Brothers of Smethwick near Birmingham. All that remains of this lighthouse is now an iron stump. A newer lighthouse was built in 1975 but this has now been superceded by a more modern light. The island is an important wildlife sanctuary and is only accesible by boat with permission required from the Peruvian Navy.
