A lighthouse was first established in 1842 and is located approximately 1 km east of the entrance to Santiago de Cuba harbour entrance.
The original lighthouse from 1842 was an octagonal cast iron tower prefabricated in New York however this was damaged during the Spanish-American war though U.S. authorities had it repaired in 1899, the year exactly coinciding with the order in Chance's books for a 4th order revolving lens.
The present tower was not completed until 1914 and the optical equipment was not installed until 1923 due to WWI.

The lighthouse appears in a good state of repair from photographs available on the internet.
