Students and teaching staff from the Learning Centre maintain this garden site, which includes a polytunnel and raised beds as well as a wooded area with a pond and some fruit trees. The site is used in various ways to support the curriculum and get pupils involved in growing.
The learners have grown crops including potatoes, tomatoes, courgettes, lettuces and sweetcorn. They particularly mentioned enjoying the sweetcorn! Flowering companion plants are used to help attract beneficial insects and discourage pests/. The learners are keen to keep trying new crops, with pumpkins being suggested.
The garden is also valued because it gives a chance to be outdoors - and even when it rains the polytunnel means there's somewhere dry to work.
Staff are always keen to hear from volunteers who would be interested in getting involved in managing the site or helping with activities.
