Where?

This site, located behind Alexander Street and currently covered by trees, shrubs and some knotweed, is an area designated for housing development within Argyll and Bute Council's Local Development Plan. The site has recently been purchased by Argyll Community Housing Association (ACHA), with a view to developing a mix of affordable and social housing.

Planning permission granted to the former owner of the site, has been granted for over 100 homes.  ACHA are committed to working with local stakeholders to ensure that the development of this site considers the community need for high quality, energy efficient, affordable housing.

Protection of key environmental assets and good water management to mitigate against flood risk will be part of this process.

It is unclear at this stage on the timescale for any development.

This map features proposed projects for the Dunoon and Kirn Local Place Plan. The projects focus on the use of land and building assets within the Dunoon and Kirn Community Council ward only. Projects also include information to inform the development of a Community Action Plan (CAP).

The affordability and availability of housing in Dunoon is a key local challenge fuelling poverty and feeding into depopulation and limited economic growth. In 22/23 there were 114 homeless presentations in Cowal, including Dunoon. Despite Argyll and Bute Council declaring a Housing Crisis, also in 2023, innovation in this area is slow. The costs of building and retro fitting homes and tackling depopulation through the provision of housing has not yet resulted in major change.
