The climate is changing, but how can we quickly take action? Here's how to get started!
Green Maps help people find local resources for a more resilient way of living. Although there are many uncertainties, let's reduce impacts now and minimize the disruptions and slow the dwindling quality of life. Use Green Map making to organize climate change and regeneration resources in your community.
Green Mapmaking can be applied to:
- Climate Action - check out GreenMap.org/cop26 - yes, we went to the UN Climate and the TED Countdown in fall 2021 - and posting our events and outcomes here and here
- Addressing Hunger - FEED Jefferson County Washington supports food education and enterprise development, both on our new platform, and in the community
- Regeneration - in Cuba, Green Mapmakers helped establish a mangrove forest in Rincón de Guanabo that withstood the rage of Hurricane Irma in 2017. Xiaman China's mangrove mapping has helped conserve these important trees, too.
- Intersectional SDGs - the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (the SDGs) are nearly invisible at the local level. We’ve matched them to our familiar icons to make them resonate, as seen in this 2021 Japanese student video.
- Policies - in Malmo Sweden, the City's Green Map (offline unfortunately) features one of the most climate-protective places in the world, including the innovative Western Harbor!
- Preparedness - in New York City, the Bike Ready video was inspired by post-storm Green Map tours. Our local project, the Powerful Green Map brought energy efficiency, renewables and climate predictions into view.
- News - in South Africa, check out the feed of eco-news on Cape Town Green Map's homepage.
- Water: In water-stressed Los Angeles, the parched Santa Monica and Ballona Wetlands Green Map refocused an entire design practice around storm water.
- Placemaking: Green Map NYC partners with the Newtown Creek Alliance on the development of the DutchKillsLoop.org, a linear bio-industrial park taking root in Long Island City (check out the 2022 report) - NCA also uses our icons in their education materials.
- Engagement - Green Map NYC's slideshow below includes tours, classroom tools and assessment resources - what do we have and what do we need to become resilient? See the videos below (here's the complete Bike Tour Video (in Chinese, too).
- Exhibitions - Thai youth created 60 Green Maps, as seen in the Green Map Impacts book. Climate impacts on biodiversity were part of Nagoya Japan's COP10 exhibit too.
- Social Media - There are wonderful locally made videos that address climate action on our YouTube channel, and if you like GIFs, see ours at giphy.com @GreenMap
