Organic or Local Food

Local food that is grown near to where it is consumed, so it has fewer 'food miles' that decrease freshness and increased shipping and other ecological impacts. Organic food is grown without pesticides (biocides), genetic modification or synthetic fertilizers. No chemicals or waxes are added after harvesting. Usually prepared in a way to maximize the nutritional value; may include fair trade or direct trade practices.

The Larder is now in its “forever home” at the Community Annexe in the grounds of the primary school where we have fridges and freezers to stock perishable items that we collect from the following supermarkets- Co-op, Morrisons, Sainsburys, Asda, Lidl and Marks and Spencers. Please come and help us reduce food waste that would otherwise go to landfill. You can have up to 10 items, as many items from the “rumble box”as you want and we even have pet food. All are welcome.

Before he passed away in 2019, Brian Glaspell cultivated this garden for many years, donating the majority of the produce to the PT Food Bank, usually about 5,000 lbs per year. His wife, Jeanie, was very happy to discover the Food Bank Growers organization and host the return of the garden's ability to provide for  the food bank.

This high production garden not only serves the students of Port Townsend High School, but the PT Food Bank during the summer months.  Teacher Jennifer Kruse helps students get the most from the plot.  During the summer months Food Bank Growers manage the space. The garden has been feeding students and donating food to the Food Bank since 2012 via this space.  Volunteers meet Fridays 9-11.

In the grounds of the community  hub on Kirk Street are several raised beds made from pallets and other recycled materials. These are used to grow produce for the food bank and provide an opportunity for staff, volunteers and clients to enjoy spending time outside. The team are planning to build several more beds this year so more volunteers are always welcome.  For more information contact hubgrubhub@gmail.com
