Where?

Housed in a Grade-B listed building that includes the most complete functioning Victorian theatre machinery, & is the second-oldest operational theatre, in the UK (more info at the Building History link below!), the building itself was opened in 1878.

The Citizens company was founded in 1943 by James Bridie, & the Citizens Theatre was permanently established in 1945, & since it has served as one of Scotland's primary theatres & theatre-companies, offering a range of productions from contemporary versions of classic plays & new Scottish drama.

*Please note - From 2018 to 2025, the building has been closed for a major redevelopment. During this time the company has been presenting shows at Tramway (a separate listing here on Glasgow Green Map, & a wonderful place worth checking out, link below!) & across Scotland, in schools, community centres, empty office spaces and more. Check out their Social Media for a much anticipated re-opening in 2025!
