Lyth Arts Centre is Scotland's most northerly mainland arts centre, presenting an annual programme of live performance across Caithness alongside contemporary visual art and an extensive participatory programme of educational and socially- engaged arts projects led by local creatives in our community. LAC strives to be a nationally and internationally recognised, industry leading small arts centre that practices radical localism and challenges conceptions about what it means to be 'rural'. Our Caithness community is at the heart of everything we do and we work across the county acting as a cultural hub for the North of Scotland.
Since the coronavirus pandemic, LAC has been developing new arts and environment programmes for our community. This has included commissioning an Environment Artist in Residence Morag Currie (https://lytharts.org.uk/environment-artist-in-residence-morag-currie/), developing an arts, blue health and climate action initiative for local young people (https://lytharts.org.uk/out-of-the-blue/) and taking part in the Highland Culture Collective with a further Environment Artist in Residence Sinead Hargan. We also led a community growing project the Unexpected Garden (https://lytharts.org.uk/unexpected-garden/) and in 2021 a festival celebrating our coasts and waters. Finally we are proud to be one of seven Climate Beacon's in Scotland (https://www.creativecarbonscotland.com/one-year-of-climate-beacons/). We are part of the Green Arts Initiative. We want to join NH&1 Climate Hub because LAC is committed to environmental sustainability in the face of the current climate crisis. All of our work is underpinned by strong environmental sustainability and climate action themes. We want to explore the climate crisis from our unique perspective here in Caithness, using the arts and creativity as a means to underpin and explore environmental initiatives in an engaging, accessible and entertaining way.
