Assynt Field Club was founded in 1986 and currently has over 175 members.
Our Club is an unincorporated association, whose aims are to encourage the study and enjoyment of Assynt’s wildlife, landscape and geology. To help us achieve our aims we prepare a programme of indoor talks and other events during the winter and organise field trips in the summer.
As mentioned below our members continue to participate in a variety of projects and surveys, many of which have resulted in reports or publications. The effect of climate on our wildlife and landscape is a concern. Recent initiatives include tree planting in Culag woods, removing invasive spruce from these woods, building nest boxes, planting marram grass to stabilise dune systems, planting wildflower meadows. Our records are a valuable resource when looking at changes in migratory patterns of bird species and numbers of recorded sightings. This applies to other wildlife, for example butterflies. We are keen to initiate benchmark studies for lichens and marine fauna so that changes over time can be monitored, and to discover how these relate to climate change.
