Dunoon Cemetry is an historic site, but it is also a huge green space and place of cultral interest in an area that doesn't have easy access to a park or green space .
Currently you can access the grave yard at the bottom of Hamilton Street and via the Boglea at the back of the tip, but the gate at the top of Alexander Street and Victoria park was bricked many years ago.
However, every morning and evening young people living in the houses at the top of the hill climb over the wall and cut through the grave yard to get to school. This is the quickest route to the school.
They have adapted the wall to create a step and bits of wood are often placed at the old entrance to help people climb over. There is a 'desire line' across the grass, and clearly it is a well used route.
There is no drop curb at this location, which takes you down to the Coop from the housing at Velrose Terrace, so is an important route. In heavy rain the end of the road floods as the drains are blocked.
Is there a way of improving access to the cemetry and supporting the young people that are walking to school to continue to do so?
The grave yard is full interesting graves, including war graves and reflects Dunoon's heriatge. Improved signage and paths could help more people access this site and learn more about the cultural heritage of the town.
