Cut Out Club is a series of monthly, themed, collage zine-making workshops open to all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels.
Zines are an increasingly popular mode of DIY publishing and self-expression, which are particularly important for minority or isolated groups whose voices are not otherwise represented in the media. The publishing industry is unfortunately very gatekept, and is also rather wasteful. Last year, we were able to save over 80 magazines from landfill and this year the weight is nearer to 100kg of mixed paper types, and we are committed to sourcing collage materials sustainably.
Aside from zine-making workshops, we have also hosted an array of community-facing events, such as a recent 'Art Supply Swap' which helped to rehome 35kg of art supplies. We are looking to further our environmental activities in order to keep making a positive impact on the community and the planet. With the launch of the Highland Zine Bothy in Inverness, there has been an increase in interest for zines across the Highlands (and Islands, where there are already zine libraries in Skye and Shetland), so it is a critical time to encourage sustainable practices within zine-making, collecting, and trading.
