Where?

Our overall aim is to promote interest in STEM and awareness of its potential applications for communities, businesses, careers and personal development through an annual dynamic programme, enabling new connections and exchange of ideas among diverse groups. Our vision celebrates the spirit of exploration and adventure in advancing into the unknown, linked to creativity and vitality, and through that to enrich the lives of people of all ages and backgrounds, to encourage young people in careers in STEM, and support local economic.

Since our inception in 1991, we have engaged in climate change initiatives, starting with discussions led by late Dr. Eric Voice and conferences on waste management organised by Orkney Heritage Society. Each year, we highlight renewable energy sector, collaborating with Heriot-Watt University, EMEC, and experts like Prof. Peter Wadhams, a leading authority on sea ice. In 2012, we organised climate change debate, involving legal professionals and structured like a court case to encourage calm and rational discussion. This approach proved highly effective in promoting balanced information and perspectives.

Several Festival members have actively contributed to climate change and sustainability efforts. Our Director, Howie Firth, has promoted environmental awareness and community projects like the North Ronaldsay wool initiative. Upcycling workshops led by Selena Kuzman and food activities by Liz Ashworth further promote sustainability through creative practices.

In 2020-21, we delivered a fully online Festival, and reached across the Highlands & Islands and beyond with our YouTube channel, in addition to our long-established website and online magazine Frontiers.

By joining H&I Climate Hub, we aim to contribute our expertise into the service of the Hub as climate challenges intensify. We appreciated the participation of communities in our online events and working with the Climate Hub, we aim to expand this collaboration around the north.
