Last year, we started to envision a digital archive that would be made in collaboration with the Green Mapmakers that would chart the outcomes, maps and media of each Green Map project. We’ve since come to understand the complexity of that grand vision and decided to start by focusing on the most important element: the impacts, as shared by the Mapmakers.
Moving these key outcomes to the forefront, this digital archive of the Impacts of Green Map Projects (taking shape at impacts.greenmap.org) will be built on our versatile mapping platform. Our plan is to open it to the Green Mapmakers in March, and invite project leaders from 65 countries to continually add to this living archive. We’ll be sending out the first views to the public on March 25, 2025, our 30th anniversary!
Yes, the Impacts Green Map will commemorate our 30th year of thinking globally and mapping locally! We’ll have a party to celebrate this fall. We welcome everyone who ever created a Green Map project to share a story about their impacts and outcomes! You will be eligible to win one of eco-chic incentive prizes donated by Patagonia. Mapmakers, see impacts.greenmap.org and add your impact story today!
There are so many reasons and ways to use this Impacts archive and share its stories in other formats, too. It will be a tremendous resource, and will complement our print map archives at New York Public Library’s Map Room, at the US Library of Congress, University of Victoria, BC Canada and other locations. Over the long term, more of the digital Green Maps and materials will be added to the Mapmakers’ Impact stories, too.

Mapmakers, add your story today! We welcome your ideas and project supporters, too! If you are new to Green Map, check this out.
We’re excited to see the stories and the kinds of impacts that are shared - we hope people in each of the 65 countries where Green Maps have been made will take part!
Since this has been a bit of a journey, we’ll share that, too but move some of the initial sketches below. We have a survey for Green Mapmakers and the first dozen to respond come from Canada, Cuba, Germany, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Taiwan, Uganda, UK and US! 100% said they'd consider relicensing their copyrighted work to share. A few comments:
“Map of Maps is an excellent idea, since it is an opportunity to learn about other experiences and make our own visible, it allows us to have a historical memory of the international and local Green Map. They will be very useful materials for future generations” Liana Bidart, Maps Verde Red, Havana
“The worldwide exchange of initiatives, green enterprises and individuals is also important regarding climate change. The categorized symbol set in use within these maps helps users … to orientate and meet people with similar spirit. That setup enhances synergies among people that prior to publishing these maps would very much likely never meet and interact.” Peter van de Loo, Berlin Green Map
