The Loisaida Center, at 710 East 9th, is a wonderful resource for all Lower East Side residents. There are programs for all ages, including Equilibrium, an energy lab led by Paul Garrin that involves teams of university students in real world cutting edge design projects and exhibits that shine a light on news possibilities for the energy transition.Latino and especially Puerto Rican culture shines here and the Loisaida Center supports an annual street fair that marks the start of summer with music and dance, as well as monthly La Bomba gatherings - both honor the ancestors and today's community heroes that make the Garden District unique! 

Proposed as an alternative to high rise development and established as a garden in 2002, the Stuyvesant Cove Park Association brought in the idea that the cove should always have food available for birds and insects. As it's on the Atlantic Flyway, birds flocked in and dropped other native seeds over the years. As the East Side Coastal Resilience project loomed closer, moveable planters were set up for a small portion of the abundant plants, and in summer 2021, many plants were dug up for transplantation as the bulldozers moved closer (as this video shows). Now re-opened a few feet higher and with moveable gates as storm protection, Stuy Cove is under the wing of Solar One, which has a new green building and learning center.  See current programs and visit soon !

This garden was an early example, with raised beds, solar panels and a compost-heated greenhouse, a hidden bioswale and more in Open Road's student-designed garden. Students won a patent for a unique composting bin then and now: "As a high-school student, Environmental Program Coordinator, Nando Rodriguez designed a unique composting bin. This original design is currently used by members to build bins for our garden. Over the course of the year members collect organic material from our headquarters, local residents and the garden itself, and engage in experiments with various composting techniques.

Surrounded by green space cultivated by residents, there's an energy conscientious here that makes VET a leader among affordable housing buildings! There's already a combined heat and power system and a test of balcony solar, plus Equilbrium's concepts for more solar and a BESS (battery energy storage system), this 400+ unit Mitchell Lama building has cool plans for its future including becoming a NORC - Naturally Occurring Retirement Community - which brings in resources to help older people thrive. 

This Passive House building will soon open, complete with solar panels and a green roof! It’s the ideal home for arts and activism collectives, many of which have thrived for decades. As seen at abcnorio.org this nonprofit has been an important part of downtown’s creative spirit since 1981. All are welcome!

This Building was the first certified Passive House in New York City, it is a gut renovation of an 1899 brownstone. It won an International Passive House Design Award and included a third story addition and a new rear façade

The Alloy Block houses two public schools: a new elementary school PS456, The Elizabeth Jennings School for Bold Explorers and a new home for the Khalil Gibran International Academy.

The building is the first Passive Plus House built in the United States–included a rehabilitation of a townhouse built in the early 1900’s. The work respected the original historical architecture of the main building and restoration of the front façade, while adding a new third floor with a mansard.

Chestnut Commons provides affordable housing for formerly homeless and low-income households. 275 affordable housing apartments are supported by an integrated programming package, including communal spaces. The project integrates a satellite Community College campus, a food manufacturing incubator that provides job training, and a credit union.

 Condominium project at 951 Pacific Street between Grand and Washington Avenues. The R-951 Residence consists of three duplex loft apartments, each approximately 1500 square feet complete with its own balcony and/or garden, laundry and separate cellar storage space.

The base of the building utilizes brick, tying it into the surrounding neighborhood. The top floors of the building break from the contextual base in form and material. The corrugated metal saw tooth roofline is a response to the environment, bringing in soft, northern light while providing roof area for a Photovoltaic array of solar panels. The top floor is connected to a roof garden filled with native plants. The result is a light-filled, dynamic space that is shaped by its relationship to daylight and connections to the exterior.

Sendero Verde will create over 700 units of affordable housing. Ranging from to moderate income, as well as the formerly homeless. Sendero Verde, with expansive community facility space, will create a home for senior and youth programs, educational facilities, local nonprofits, arts and culture.

The project is a full gut renovation with features including: thermal bridge free detailing, Intello and Stoguard air barrier, Klearwall Ecoclad Passive House certified windows, Lamilux skylights, cellulose, open cell, and XPS rigid insulation system, Proclima tapes, Zehnder ERV 550, and Mitsubishi heat pump conditioned air. Architect, Builder Jeremy Shannon from Build with Prospect will be doing the walk through starting at 3pm. A six story six family residential multifamily building with a Community facility office on grade. Come see the real story of what drove the environmental design for this mid-block, reconstructed row house that caused a fair level of controversy. The original structure, designed in the late 19th century, suffered from an unfortunate 1970’s “re-do” resulting in a prison-like façade that was structurally unstable. Add to that the newly enforced floodplain regulations (the house had to be raised), high water table and moisture conditions and jointly owned party-wall contention. If that was not enough, the owners, taking into account that NYC buildings are responsible for 75% of total greenhouse gas emissions, desired to maximize energy conservation – thus following passive house standards. The measures (high R- value insulation, air barrier, high performance windows and doors and heat recovery) combined with urban agriculture features, storm water retention and solar hot water truly make this two-family house in NYC unique.
