NYC Open Engagement Green Map

Celebrating the whole of NYC at the Open Engagement festival, this mapping project utilized the famous NYC Panorama at Queens Museum, a giant 3-D map of the city. This workshop was created by Los Hibridos and Green Map NYC in spring 2014, and participants came from all over the world. We all enjoyed exploring the sites at the far ends of the city simply by walking around this "indoor helicopter tour of New York".

Charting the ever-changing environment of New York City since 1992, this was our second time to use the Panorama to showcase Green Map's perspective. #panorama

The North Brooklyn neighborhood of Greenpoint has a history of both pollution and environmental activism, as community residents and activists have banded together, sometimes with the aid of their local representatives, to fight highly polluting facilities and practices situated in a now rapidly being gentrified traditionally working-class and Polish immigrant neighborhood.

The Palisades are an iconic national natural landmark rising from the shore of the Hudson River. These magnificent cliffs are home to many species of wildlife and a significant migration corridor to many species of birds. The Palisades are a popular hiking area and contain many historical sites. Another popular way to experience the beauty of the Palisades is to observe these cliffs from the Eastern bank of the Hudson River, in Northern Manhattan.

JH SCRAPS, a community composting center operated by the Jackson Heights Beautification Group established was established in Oct. 2012. The composting project was urged by the Jackson Heights Beautification Group’s Green Agenda for Jackson Heights, an environmental planning effort that drew more than 400 residents to 15 outreach meetings. This is an example of community advocacy and action. The rich soil that the food scraps provide once they are composted is returned to parks and green spaces in Jackson Heights.
