Green Building

Proposed as an alternative to high rise development and established as a garden in 2002, the Stuyvesant Cove Park Association brought in the idea that the cove should always have food available for birds and insects. As it's on the Atlantic Flyway, birds flocked in and dropped other native seeds over the years. As the East Side Coastal Resilience project loomed closer, moveable planters were set up for a small portion of the abundant plants, and in summer 2021, many plants were dug up for transplantation as the bulldozers moved closer (as this video shows). Now re-opened a few feet higher and with moveable gates as storm protection, Stuy Cove is under the wing of Solar One, which has a new green building and learning center.  See current programs and visit soon !

Early examples of super insulated efficiency,  there are four affordable Lower East Side People's Mutual Housing Association apartment buildings designed by Chris Benedict RA and Henry Gifford are on East 3rd Street between Avenues A and D.

A gut renovation of a single-family Victorian home met Passive House Plus performance levels by installing efficient equipment, achieving an impressive degree of envelope airtightness, and adding a solar PV array.

This Building was the first certified Passive House in New York City, it is a gut renovation of an 1899 brownstone. It won an International Passive House Design Award and included a third story addition and a new rear façade

This affordable housing gut renovation meets the Passive House standard to produce comfortable, healthy, and energy efficient homes for the tenants, many of whom have lived here for more than 20 years.

The combination of focused Passive House construction techniques and careful restoration of historical detail during this gut reconstruction project gave new life to an Upper West Side renaissance revival row house.

Innovative use of insulated CMU blocks to address lot line construction feasibility, performance and fire-rating requirements. Exploration in using basic, modest cost materials to create unique aesthetic characteristics while maximizing energy efficiency.

New York City's first all-electric and passive house skyscraper.  A mixed use tower with 440 market rate and affordable homes and retail spaces along Flatbush Avenue. The building is the first tower of phase 1 of The Alloy Block and was completed in Spring of 2024

The Building is oriented to allow for the majority of the units to have views to the Atlantic Ocean.

LaMora Senior Living is a 60 Unit MF Affordable Senior Housing. The building is 5 stories and features 57 1-bedroom and 3 2-bedroom apartments.

This award-winning, 57,675 sf, 8-story 68-unit affordable housing apartment building for low-income seniors meets the NYSERDA Multifamily Performance Standards for Energy Star Certification as well as the Enterprise Green Communities Criteria. It is one of the first affordable senior housing development in the United States to meet the Passive House Institute design standards.
