Rain gardens are the first line of defence against toxins leaking into local watersheds. Gardens of marshy, native plants attract pollinators with their blooms and filter polluted runoff with their roots, making sure that no chemicals end up in urban streams and rivers!💧Together we can protect our watersheds and generations of salmon to come!
Charting Forgotten Spaces: This particular project was in some ways an outlier for Green Map – set in a Catholic Church on a block of Harlem (East 129th Street) which the NY Times had designated as the “most hopeless” in all of New York City and investigated by young people who were hoping that their findings would inspire some accelerated positive change in a neighborhood which had not experienced much of that in their short lifetimes.
Our Connected! Green Maps raised awareness of the amenities inside major parks, along trails, and in surrounding neighborhoods, emphasizing the unique local assets, history, opportunities to learn and take action, and the symbiotic relationship potential. Check out the Passport we created earlier, too!In 2014, we contributed to the book, Green Map Impacts. We also undertook many 'Green Map Your Community' projects with youth.Provided by Janet Felsten, Feb 2025
Paris is a city where the Green Map project did not 'gel' and there was no published edition, as far as we know. Then, we had a policy of one Green Map project per city to reduce confusion and rivalries. There were two parties who wanted to get Paris rolling, and our nonprofit introduced them and encouraged them to work together. Alas, their goals were too different and both moved on to other projects. We learned to match people carefully, and eventually ended that exclusive policy.
Example: Since there have been Green Map projects on all the other continents, we really would like someone in Antarctica to create a map. Some years ago, a researcher heading there for a few months was interested, so there was a glimmer of hope. What could they map? Habitat, views, shared resources, etc.
Example: In the early days of Green Map, there was an interested Kenyan that did not create a Green Map, but he helped us understand how much harder it would be to make maps where there were few resources. In the era of the 'world wide wait' it was easy to mail a disk with the icon font, and some graphics, but could they be used locally everywhere?
The Green Map Project in Hadera (2021–2023)
In 2024, the Human Impacts Institute launched a Green Map project that placed youth leadership and community storytelling at its core. Through the Youth Speak Out! fellowship, 12 young people (primarily from underserved neighborhoods) received training in creative climate communication and collaboratively built a Green Map highlighting over 100 local climate and cultural initiatives across Marseille.
Originally called the Green Apple Map, this New York City project was the the very first Green Map! About 25 editions have been created at either the citywide or neighborhood level. It has impacted the world by creating an example that sparked the Green Map movement. It gave New York City a chance to be known for all the sustainability practices its home to, and gave New Yorkers and visitors the ability to get started on a greener pathway or career. It's been central to the director's eco-design practice and gave Wendy Brawer access to to collaborations, appointments and travel worldwide.

Tororo Green Mapmakers made two maps, printed map and digital. The maps were made by youths and adults. The map has helped in raising environmental awareness to the people of Tororo which has resulted in taking some positive actions to create green sites which are friendly to humanity.
